Instant Pot FAQs

Can you put frozen meat in the Instant Pot?

In many instances, it’s perfectly fine to cook frozen meat in the Instant Pot. Because it cooks so quickly the raw meat won’t affect the other ingredients. It will take a bit longer to come to pressure and cook. I don’t recommend using frozen meat for recipes that require searing first.

What can I cook in the Instant Pot?

A lot of your favorite recipes can be cooked in the Instant Pot. The Instant Pot requires some sort of cooking liquid in the bottom to boil, create steam and bring it to pressure. So any recipe that has cooking liquid like broth or water work great. I’d avoid anything that you want really crispy like breaded chicken or a seared steak.

How to use an Instant Pot (Basic settings)

The most important buttons to know include: pressure cook (manual cook), saute and cancel. We often use the saute button to cook ingredients like onion and garlic before pressure cooking. The other buttons, like soup and rice, can be handy, but I find using the pressure cook button is the most effective.

What’s the difference between quick release and natural release?

Quick release is when you push the valve from sealing to venting to allow all of the steam to come out quickly at once. I like to use a spoon to switch the valve and then place a towel over the steam to keep it quiet and protect our cabinets. When a recipe calls for natural release, it means do nothing and let the Instant Pot release the pressure slowly on its own.

Gluten Free Pantry Staples

  • Rice: we love using rice as a base to top our favorite gluten free meals. We love brown, white and basmati.
  • Gluten free pasta: there are so many options for this now like brown rice pasta, chickpea pasta or lentil pasta. All of them are great!
  • Tapioca/arrowroot starch: This ingredient is affordable and found in the baking aisle with the flour. It’s a great clean ingredient for thickening sauces.
