What Does Aetna Medicare Supplement Plan G Cover?

Medicare Supplement Insurance, also called Medigap, helps pay for out-of-pocket expenses like deductibles, copayments and coinsurance that you face when you get care covered by Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Part B).

There are nine types of Medicare costs that can be covered by one of the 10 standardized Medicare Supplement plans available in most states. Medicare Plan G from Aetna – and Plan G from any other insurance company – fully or partially covers eight of those nine Medicare costs. The chart below shows what Aetna Plan G covers.

Plan G doesn’t pay for the Medicare Part B deductible. This deductible is $240 per year in 2024, which is potentially far less of a financial responsibility than many of the other costs Plan G does cover.

Aetna Medicare Supplement Plan G covers 80% of the cost of foreign emergency care, which is the maximum amount allowed by U.S. law.

How Much Does Aetna Medicare Supplement Plan G Cost?

The cost of Aetna Medicare Supplement Plan G will vary according to location, gender, tobacco use, age and when you apply for a policy.

Does Aetna Medicare Supplement Plan G Have a Deductible?

Aetna sells two different versions of Medicare Supplement Plan G.

  • Standard Plan G contains no deductible and coverage begins with the very first use.
  • High-deductible Plan G includes an annual deductible of $2,800 in 2024. Plan coverage does not kick in until you meet spend deductible amount on covered care. The tradeoff for the deductible is that the monthly premiums for this plan are typically much lower.

The deductible amount for high-deductible Plan G is standardized by Medicare and is required for every insurance company, including Aetna Plan G.

Where Is Aetna Medicare Supplement Plan G Sold?

Aetna sells Medicare Supplement Insurance plans in 44 states and the District of Columbia, excluding only Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Washington.

Plan G is typically part of the Aetna plan lineup in every area where the company sells coverage.

Does Aetna Medicare Supplement Plan G Cover SilverSneakers?

Aetna Medicare Supplement plans do not include a membership to the popular fitness program SilverSneakers. However, Aetna Medicare Advantage plans may cover SilverSneakers.

An Aetna Medicare Advantage plan covers all of your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits, and many plans also offer additional benefits not found in Part A or Part B, such as coverage for dental and vision care, prescription drugs and even SilverSneakers programs.

It’s important to note Medicare Advantage plans and Medigap plans are very different, and you can’t have each type of coverage at the same time.

When Can I Enroll in Aetna Medicare Supplement Plan G?

You can apply for Aetna Medicare Supplement Plan G anytime. However, the best time to do so is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or during another time when you have guaranteed issue rights.

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period begins the first month you are at least 65 years old and are enrolled in Medicare Part B, and it lasts for six consecutive months.

During your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, you have guaranteed issue rights, which means insurance companies are not allowed to perform medical underwriting and base your premiums on the status of your health.

If you wait to sign up for Medicare Supplement Insurance until after your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or when you don’t have guaranteed issue rights, you may be subject to medical exams and questionnaires that may drive up the cost of your plan or cause you to be denied coverage altogether based on your health.
