I never thought I would be able to see or own an actual copy of this book, ever.

Thanks to Titan Books, this book is finally getting reprinted. The wait is over.

The production quality of the book is excellent. It's a 208-page hardcover that's slightly larger than A4 size. The drawings are reproduced very clearly. If you've seen the PDF copies that are floating on the internet, this is exactly that except in physical copy, right down to the number of words per line.

I love the text of the book. The tone is very encouraging and the instructions are always clear. The examples are beautifully illustrated. It's easy to follow along and learn.

This is a highly recommended book on figure drawing, a classic that gets mentioned frequently.

This is essential reading/studying for aspiring artists, you'll return to this many times and be rewarded for all your time invested in it. Bring on the other Loomis books!

I compared it to the 1946

Submitted by Ivar_L on

I compared it to the 1946 edition I got from Ebay some years ago. New facsimile is very similar, except it's some 1.5 times thicker, just because of the paper used. All the pages are the same, only difference is the other side of the title page. Image quality is also the same, it looks like most of the images in original book are also "bitmaps" and not rastered. Only pages with the difference are the same pages I see here on the preview video window - the pages with small sport pose photograps, Moiré is quite visible there.

I am currently working my way through "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain". Do you recommend Loomis' figure drawing book immediately after Betty Edwards' book?

@Anirudh
Yes, you can get the Loomis book next. Both are very different books actually.

Hey Teoh!

Hey Teoh!

If you would recommend top 5 books to get, in order to learn by yourself how to paint and draw realistically, which would they be?

Because I both draw ( graphite & colored pencils) and paint ( watercolour & acrylics) reallisticaly, mostly portraits and figure drawing have I been thinking on buying these 5:
- Colour and Light
- The sciene and practice of drawing
- Anatomy for artist
- 50 small paintings : acrylic
- 50 small paintings : wattercolour

But beacuse I want books as a source of inspiration/ reference but also as a technique book that will teach me a lot ( my weak points are the proportions and the values) so I can be better at drawing, I am not sure if the choice is right. So I decided to try my luck and ask you because of your huge reviews that you’ve done on art books after your opinion.

Thank you!

( I am not a beginner, I would say that I am Intermediate )

You can consider some of the books on this list:
https://www.parkablogs.com/content/best-anatomy-books-artists-some-of-my...

And also these two books, Secrets to Drawing Realistic Faces and Lessons in Classical Drawing: Essential Techniques from Inside the Atelier

Books on classical drawing may be useful. Classical drawing is about realism.
