This day is also the perfect opportunity to practice making predictions, getting results, adding new vocabulary words, and hands-on activities to your plans!

What do you think Punxsutawney Phil will announce? 6 more weeks of winter or an early spring?

To be honest, I still find myself excited to see what Phil will see on Groundhog Day.

Groundhog Day Ideas for Kindergarten

Sometimes Groundhog Day lands on the weekend. What is great about these activities is that you can do some of them on the days leading up to Groundhog Day and you do some of the activities on the day of Groundhog Day. Even if Groundhog Day is on the weekend, you can still discuss the results from the weekend, watch a replay of Punxsutawney Phil, and complete the rest of the activities.

Prediction Class Graph and Data

Groundhog Day Ideas and Crafts - A Spoonful of Learning (11)

Making a prediction about whether or not Phil the groundhog will see his shadow or not is so much fun. Now getting to see what our friends and our teacher predicts is even more fun!

This Groundhog Day prediction class graph allows students to display their prediction on whether they think the groundhog will or will not see his shadow.

I like to have one student come up at a time to place their prediction on the class graph.

This is the perfect opportunity to have students practice speaking complete sentences in front of the class. This can be a hard and scary thing to do at this age! Even if a student only says yes or no in front of the class, it is a huge deal and a wonderful start! I know I get nervous talking in front of large groups!

After everyone has their prediction on the class graph, you can discuss which prediction has more and less, count the predictions, and more!

Last, I like to add this Groundhog Day prediction data worksheet as a follow-up activity. This allows students to practice reading a graph and filling in their own graph and other information to match the class graph.

I like to do this activity broken up into two days. We color the hats and make our predictions the first day. On the second day that we work on them, students write the result of what the groundhog saw and if there will be 6 more weeks of winter or early spring.

These hats are pretty fun for the teachers to wear too!😉

Vocabulary Cards for Groundhog Day

There are a lot of new words and vocabulary that go along with Groundhog Day. Throughout the Groundhog Day class book, there are vocabulary words that are placed in bold.

I placed all of those words on strips with an image to help show the meaning of the word. Adding pictures to vocabulary words is incredibly helpful for student understanding, learning, and confidence.
