Easy Fried Mushrooms Recipe

I truly don’t know what I’d do without my parents. I know, I know, this post is about a fried mushrooms recipe, but a gal has to praise her parents every chance she gets when they’re as good as mine.

When I’m having a bad day or celebrating a special occasion, I usually get the phone call,

What are you doing tomorrow night?

I’ve known them long enough that I know it means they want to cook and feed us something GOOD! (Have I mentioned that “food is love?” Well it comes honest from my parents.)

Deep Fried Mushrooms

A few months ago, the phone call was made, and we were invited down for my FAVORITE meal ever. Fried deer meat, mashed potatoes, and white gravy. Then my dad added in a little extra surprise… deep-fried mushrooms.

Holy moly. When I watched him make this fried mushroom recipe, I realized I had been missing out on a delicious side dish, because I thought they would be hard to make.

Easy Side Dish Recipe

To my surprise, they’re possibly one of the easiest fried side dishes ever. So when I asked him how to make them, and what spice(s) he used for the breading… I was HOOKED when he told me all that it was.

“That’s it?”

So I picked up a carton of sliced mushrooms the next time I was at the store, and whipped these up for you all, so you can make them too!

Can you Use Button Mushrooms?

You can! But we personally don’t like button mushrooms because of the texture when you bite in to them. The sliced mushrooms make them easier to eat and give you that “crispier, crunchier” texture rather than the “bursting with juices” texture that the button mushrooms have.

How to Wash Mushrooms

Did you know you’re not supposed to soak mushrooms? They’ll absorb water, and you sure don’t want that for taste/frying.

Just wipe or lightly rinse with cool water and pat dry. (Better yet, if you have time, wash them early and let air dry after you pat dry too… just so there is little chance of any water remaining on the mushrooms.)

Ingredients

  • Seasoned salt
  • Flour
  • Oil
  • Sliced Mushrooms

That’s it. The seasoned salt was super tasty in the flour breading and made a big difference. But feel free to use a different seasoning.
Some seasoning options to consider are:

How to Fry Mushrooms

You’ll start by combining flour and seasoned salt in a bowl or ziptop bag.

Add in your clean mushrooms and shake or stir to coat with the flour-spice mixture.

How Long to Fry Mushrooms

Heat your oil in a pan over medium heat and once oil is ready, add in your mushrooms and cook for 2-3 minutes (flipping if necessary) until golden brown.

Mmmm… looks at those tasty little fried morsels.

Eating these mushrooms by themselves is how we eat them but they’d also be amazing alongside chipotle sauce!

Thinking “Inside” the Box

Until I saw my dad do this, I never even thought to purchase sliced mushrooms in the store and fry them. I always just assumed fried mushrooms had to wait until morels were ready in the woods, or I had to have fried mushrooms at one of my favorite restaurants!

I’m so glad that I can make these at home now!

FAQs

What is the secret to crispy mushrooms? ›

First, make sure the mushrooms are completely dry, then cook them in a hot skillet with some oil or butter as you normally would. Wait until you take them off the heat to shower them with a sprinkle of salt. This seems like a really small thing, but it actually makes a big difference.

What is the best way to fry mushrooms? ›

Method. To make the pan-fried mushrooms, heat the butter in a frying pan over a medium heat. When the butter starts to bubble, add the mushrooms and cook for 4–5 minutes, until the mushrooms are dark golden brown around the edges. If the pan gets dry, add a little more butter.

What oil is best to fry mushrooms in? ›

Olive oil, avocado oil, or grapeseed oil work beautifully. Add the mushrooms to the pan, with a little salt and pepper, and toss them with the oil in the pan, keeping the heat on medium high.

Should you soak mushrooms before frying? ›

Since it's clear that there's nothing wrong with soaking mushrooms, that's the way many clean them, being a fast and thorough process. If you've got a colander that fits into a bowl, you can place the mushrooms in the colander, put it into a bowl in the sink, and fill with water.

What enhances the flavor of mushrooms? ›

Another ingredient that can enhance the flavor of mushrooms is soy sauce or tamari. These ingredients can add a savory, umami flavor to mushroom dishes and make them taste more meaty. Try balsamic vinegar, butter or olive oil, lots of fresh garlic, and some fresh herbs.

How to make mushroom crispy in a pan? ›

Tips for the Perfect Texture

Preheat Your Pan: Start with a hot pan to ensure your mushrooms sear rather than steam. This helps in achieving that desirable crispy exterior. Don't Overcrowd the Pan: Cook in batches if necessary. Crowding can cause the mushrooms to steam and become soggy.

Is it best to fry mushrooms in butter or oil? ›

Butter is great because it adds lots of flavor and produces a nice golden brown exterior, while adding oil allows the mushrooms to cook a little more quickly at slightly higher heat.

What we should not do before cooking mushroom? ›

Never salt the mushrooms before cooking. Salt draws out moisture and will therefore make them extremely mushy.

Should you season mushrooms before cooking? ›

This will make them soggy and slimy in texture, so you should wait until you have fully cooked the 'shrooms and allowed them some time to cool before seasoning them for the best results on your mushroom dish.

What liquid to cook mushrooms in? ›

Mushrooms are mostly water. You have to drive that water out to concentrate their flavor and prevent them from being mushy. Sautéing them in hot oil, getting them nicely browned and cooking them until they are dry will give you the best results.

Do you season mushrooms? ›

Salt your mushrooms at the end: I know this seems odd, but mushrooms are one of the only things I salt towards the end of cooking. Salt brings out moisture, which, in the case of mushrooms, prevents them from browning in the pan.

Why are my fried mushrooms soggy? ›

Not Washing Them Properly. Not washing mushrooms the right way can make them soggy, says Schmuck. "Certain kinds of mushrooms require washing but mushrooms soak up water quickly and become soggy," he says. "Always wash your mushrooms whole, never after cutting them.

Why boil mushrooms before frying? ›

Starting Your Mushrooms In Water Intensifies Their Flavor

When we cook mushrooms, both the water and the air are forced out of the hyphae, collapsing the air pockets and preventing any water or oil from entering the mushroom.

What happens if you don't wash mushrooms before cooking? ›

"Since mushrooms are already high in water, about 85-95 percent, waterlogged mushrooms will develop a diluted flavor and have a rubbery and slimy texture after cooking," says Sofia Norton, RD.

How do you keep fried mushrooms crispy? ›

Use a dry coating like flour, cornflour, or breadcrumbs. This will absorb the natural moisture coming from the mushrooms and keep them crispy. Get the oil to the right high temperature before frying anything – and keep it at that temperature.

What does baking soda do to mushrooms? ›

Does baking soda kill mushrooms? No, it does not kill mushrooms but halts their growth. Sprinkling baking soda over the mushrooms in your mulch can help reduce their spread, as well as provide a pH buffer that may discourage further growth.
