How to Apply:

  • Complete program prerequisite courses
  • Submit official high school or GED transcripts to the Office of the Registrar at Malcolm X College.
  • Submit official college transcriptsto the Office of the Registrar at Malcolm X College. City Colleges of Chicago Transcripts donot require submission.
  • Complete the ATI TEAS exam with the required scores.
  • Calculate admissions cumulative GPA. (See College Advisor). Must have a cumulative minimum G.P.A of 2.5 for theAdvance Certificate inPN and a cumulative minimum G.P.A of 2.75for theA.A.S in Nursing.
  • Certified/Licensed: C.N.A. for A.A.SNursing Degree program;Unencumbered LPN licensefor LPNBridge Pathway.

ATI TEAS Requirement

ATI TEAS Score requirement for the Advanced CertificatePN: Cumulative Score of 60% and Reading Score of 70%. ATI TEAS Score requirement for AAS in Nursing: Cumulative Score of 65% and Reading Score of 73%.

The Academic Support Center has resources to assist in preparing for the ATI TEAS Exam. Click on Academic SupportCenterfor more information. Once you are ready to take the ATI TEAS exam, click hereto register. All MXC Nursing applicants are required to take the ATI TEAS exam in personat Malcolm X College campus. Exam dates will be available soon.

About CCCSON

The City Colleges of Chicago School of Nursing (CCCSON) program is concerned with the individual patient in the context of family and society. We focus our efforts on the promotion, conservation, and restoration of the individual’s patterns of health and health-seeking behavior. Nursing seeks to facilitate the achievement of an optimum level of physical, social, psychological, and spiritual health. Patient-nurse relationships are based upon mutual trust and respect and the nurse’s professional competence. A high level of accountability is required when the nurse assumes patient care responsibilities. To prepare nursing students for the role of the professional registered nurse; CCCSON combines nursing theory and practices with general education. Students are provided clinical experiences and caring for individuals ofall ages, through skills lab, simulation, and clinical settings throughout Chicago and surrounding suburbs.

Our nursing education program meets the standards of theIllinois Board of Nursing and theAccreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

Program Mission

The mission of the CCCSON is to provide students with evidence-based education andto prepare transformational and compassionate nurses for the delivery of culturally competent patient care in a caring and healing environment.

AdmissionPolicy The number of newly admitted and returning nursing students will be limited to the availability of nursing faculty, clinical sites, and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing program growth size restrictions Eligibility for admission to the A.A.S. The Nursing degree program requires completion ofall prerequisite coursework with a final grade of “C” or higher.

Affiliations

The program is affiliated with various hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and other community agencies. Program affiliates offer students supervised clinical learning experiences in medical-surgical, mental health, maternal-child, pediatrics, and gerontological nursing. The curriculum is designed to prepare the student for employment in a variety of settings

Accreditation

The City Colleges of Chicago School of Nursing is ACEN accredited. The next onsite accreditation review will be in spring 2025.

School of Nursing Pre-requisite Requirements for the Associate in Applied Science in Nursing and the Advanced Certificate in Practical Nursing Programs.

Prospective Nursing applicantswho are interested in enrolling inone of the Nursing programs must complete the following program pre-requisites and submit the selected admission application for consideration. All pre-requisites must be completed by the application deadline.Course prerequisites, cumulative G.P.A., ATI TEAS Scores, and the required medical documents must be submittedno later than the application deadline. Nursing applicantsmust wait for the package code to proceed with submitting the appropriate medical documentation designated for the nursing program.

Associate in Applied Science in Nursing Prerequisite Requirements

All pre-requisite courses (4) must be completed prior to admission into the program. Pre-requisite courses (4) include:

  • Biology 121 with a "C" or higher (completed within the past 10 years)
  • Chemistry 121 or higher level chemistry,with a "C" or higher (completed within the past 10 years)
  • English 101 with a "C" or higher
  • Math 118 or higher level math, with a "C" or higher

LPN Bridge Pathway to Nursing

The LPN Bridge Pathway is for a Licensed Practical Nurseto become a Registered Nurse.

  • Biology 121 with a "C" or higher (completed within the past 10 years)
  • Chemistry 121 or higher level chemistry, with a "C" or higher (completed within the past 10 years)
  • English 101 with a "C" or higher
  • Math 118 or higher level math,with a "C" or higher
  • Biology 226 with a "C" or higher (completed within the past 5 years)
  • Biology 227 with a "C" or higher (completed within the past 5 years)
  • Microbiology 233 with a "C" or higher (completed within the past 5 years)
  • LPN Bridge Applicants must complete all 100-level pre-requisites and at least two of the 200-level science pre-requisites to be considered for the nursing program. One 200-level prerequisite can be completed prior to taking Nursing 210 and Nursing 211. Accepted LPN students must self-enroll in Nursing 102 during the fall semester.

Advanced Certificate in Practical Nursing Pre-requisite Requirements​

  • Biology 120 with a "C" or higher
  • Biology 121 with a "C" or higher (completed within the past 10 years)
  • English 101 with a "C" or higher
  • Math 118 or higher level math,with a "C" or higher

Additional Information

  • Acceptance into the City Colleges of Chicago School of Nursing (CCCSON) is competitive and requires prior admission to CCC.
  • The number of newly admitted and returning nursing students will be limited to the availability of nursing faculty, clinical sites, and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing program growth size restrictions Eligibility for admission to the A.A.S inNursing Degree program requires completion ofall prerequisite coursework with a final grade of “C” or higher.
  • Nursing pre-requisites can be completed at any one of the seven City Colleges of Chicago or an accredited institution.
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher is required for admission into the Practical Nursing Program.
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher is required for admission into the Associates of Applied Science Nursing Program.
  • Review the "Nursing Student Handbook" link in the "Learn More" section of this page to obtain a better understanding of the time commitment, academic, and functional expectations if extended acceptance into the CCCSON Program.
  • Students completing the final semester of pre-requisite courses may apply for admission.
  • The ATI TEAS exam must be taken at one of the City Colleges of Chicago. Students may take the test three times in a 12-month period. Students must score a minimum of 65% in the cumulative, and 73% in the reading for the AAS Degree Nursing Program. Students must score a minimum of 60% in thecumulative, and 70% in the reading for the Practical Nursing program. Study preparation for the exam is encouraged. Support to prepare for the ATI TEAS exam can be accessed through the Academic Support Center at Malcolm X College.
  • “ATI’s best practice to follow for administering ATI TEAS retakes, to help ensure students’ best results, is to limit the number of retakes per year with remediation periods between retakes. Each student should be limited to three retakes in 1 year. The suggested remediation period is no fewer than 2 weeks to 30 days, which is an appropriate time length to remediate between attempts and follows the majority of institutions’ remediation period.”
